Summary edit

Description
English: A £160,000 hole Chwarel Gorseddau was an open quarry worked in galleries. The slate was easily accessible compared with quarries in much of the western part of the Caernarfonshire slate belt where deep pits had to be dug to extract the rock. The only problem was that the slate was of such poor quality. The owners, and their London backers, knew nothing about quarrying and relied for advice on a German geologist of dubious reputation. The quarry was developed from 1855 on 'a no expense spared' basis. Yet, even at its peak production in 1860, Gorseddau produced only 2,148 tons of saleable slate. This compared with 100,000 tons in the same year at Dinorwig Quarry. Gorseddau closed in 1867. As Samuel Jenkins wrote in the Mining Journal in the late 1860s "There was no quarry there, the wonder is that it cost this company this enormous amount of money to find it out".
