DescriptionA 7000 year old factory - geograph.org.uk - 616161.jpg |
English: A 7000 year old factory These indentations, now much hidden by the heather, are the site of a Neolithic axe factory dating back to the 5th millennium BCE. The stone age inhabitants of the area dug quite deep pits to access fused shale at the interface with the volcanic intrusion which forms Mynydd Rhiw. When a pit became dangerous to work due to the overhang they moved nearby and dug a new hole. The overlying spoil from this newer pit was deposited into the old so that partially filled it provided a sheltered space in which to manufacture axes. The Mynydd Rhiw axe factory was not the only Neolithic factory in North Wales. A bigger one existed at Graig Lwyd above Penmaenmawr SH717749. |
