n in a more general sense, sig-nifies the whole country of Canaan, the wholeland of promise, as well beyond as on this sideJordan, though pretty frequently it is restrainedto the country on this side that river; so thatin later times the words Judea and Palestinewere synonymous. We find, also, the nameof Syria Palestina given to the land of promise,and even sometimes this province is compre-hended in Coelo-Syria, or the Lower Syria.Herodotus is the most ancient writer weknow that speaks of Syria Palestina. Heplaces it between Phenicia and Egypt. SeeCanaan. PALM TREE, nnn. Exodus xv, 27, &c.This tree, sometimes called the date tree,grows plentifully in the east. It rises to agreat height. The stalks are generally fullof rugged knots, which are the vestiges of thedecayed leaves; for the trunk of this tree isnot solid, like other trees, but its centre isfilled with pith, round which is a tough barkfull of strong fibres when young, which, asthe tree grows old, hardens and becomes lig.

To this bark the leaves are closelyjoined, which in the centre rise erect; but,after they are advanced above the vaginawhich surrounds them, they expand very wideon every side the stem ; and, as the olderleaves decay, the stalk advances in height.The leaves, when the tree has grown to a sizefor bearing fruit, are six or eight feet long,are very broad when spread out, and are usedfor covering the tops of houses, &c. The fruit,which is called date, grows below the leavesin clusters and is of a sweet and agreeabletaste. The learned Keempfer, as a botanist,an antiquary, and a traveller, has exhaustedthe whole subject of palm trees. The dili-gent natives, says Mr. Gibbon, celebrated,either in verse or prose, the three hundred andsixty uses to which the trunk, the branches,the leaves, the juice, and the fruit, were skil-fully applied.
