La Mecque, où le prophète Mahomet est né et a vécu pendant les 50 premières années de sa vie, est la ville la plus sacrée dans l'Islam. On y trouve également la Kaabah, sanctuaire saint de l'islam également appelé la "demeure de Dieu" (Bayt Allah). Les musulmans du monde entier prient en direction de la Mecque et de la Kaabah. Médine est la deuxième ville la plus sacrée de l'Islam, où le prophète Mahomet a cherché refuge, il y est mort et y fut enterré.
