DescriptionA New Map of North America (Jonathon Carver 1778).jpg |
A New Map of North America (Jonathan Carver 1778) This map tells more about the business of mapping than it does about the mapping of Manitoba, through the details shown are features of Manitoba hydrography. This map is attached to Jonathon Carver’s book, relating his travels across the continent. Without having resource to his narrative, it is obvious from the observation of his map that Carver has put together a collage of outdated forms. These include the Lakes Isatys, Assinipoels, Christinaux and Alemipigon in the south taken from the Mitchell map, and thereby from Franquelin and De l’Isle; the Jeffery’s version of the Nelson river, Rapid river and associated lakes, appropriated from De l’Isle; and rhe Manitoba and Border Lakes of French origin, as published by Bellin. In is unfortunate that the considerable data obtained by English servants inland in the 1750s and through the next several decades were not released. As a result, these years were rather sterile for the mapping of western Canada, and the maps of noted cartographers bear witness to this fact. (Warkentin and Ruggles. Historical Atlas of Manitoba. map 49, p. 124) A New Map of North America : From Latest Discoveries, 1778. Engrav’d for Carvers Travels. Drawn by John Carver.
