Between 3000 and 2000 b.c. the Chaldeans, whose home was adistrict on the Persian Gulf, planted themselves in Babylonia.Repeatedly they got possession of Babylon, and finally gainedthe mastery in that region. The language which prevailedwas that of the Semitic rulers. The Semitic element was evenmore mixed in Assyria. ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA 39 The history of Babylon is ascertained partly from fragmentsof their native historian, Berosus, but the annals of bothBabylonia and Assyria are brought to light chiefly by thecuneiform, or wedge-shaped, inscriptions upon the ruins oftheir cities, especially those of Nineveh, which have beenunearthed in recent times.
