Description |
The title attached to this etching references an earthquake, but that is incorrect. This is a 1761 etching of the ruins of the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church in Place-Royale in Québec City. The church which was destroyed during the siege and Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759 during the French and Indian War. The original etching by Richard Short and Antoine Benoist. is titled "A View of the Church of Notre Dame de la Victoire; Built in Commemoration of the raising the siege in 1695, and destroyed in 1759."
