English: A delegation of United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC) officials look on as the UNCMAC Honor Guard drapes the United Nations flag over the transfer case of what is believed to be one of five U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War who were repatriated during a ceremony at the Panmunjom Freedom House. The delegation received the remains from North Korean officials during the eighth repatriation ceremony held since joint search and recovery operations began in Korea in 1996. The five sets of remains brings the total returned to 19. Kim Yong-kyu, a spokesman for the U.N. command said the remains were recovered from Gaechon City, about 50 miles north of Pyongyang. The U.S. 2nd Infantry Division suffered nearly 5,000 casualties while retreating through the area after China entered the war in late 1950 heightening the possibility that the remains are of U.S. soldiers. The repatriated remains will be shipped to the Army's Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii for processing. |
