By thebetter class of worshipers, however, it wasalways recognized as disorderly, and a par-tial defection from the legal standard; sothat, where only the more flagrant corrup-tions were shunned, the sacrificing on highplaces was noted as a smaller evil that con-tinued to prevail; and the extent to whichHezekiahs reformation in matters of relig-ion was carried is marked by the circum-stance that in his time the high places wereremoved, that is, the altars on them, andother erections attached to these were pull-ed down.1 After the time of Josiah we findno further mention of these high places; butthere is still a strong predilection
