But with the fallingasunder of the kingdom, and the manifoldpolitical and social disorders which grew outof it, the proper feeling of unity was againinterrupted, and the habit of worshiping onHigh places by degrees crept in. By thebetter class of worshipers, however, it wasalways recognized as disorderly, and a par-tial defection from the legal standard; sothat, where only the more flagrant corrup-tions were shunned, the sacrificing on highplaces was noted as a smaller evil that con-tinued to prevail; and the extent to whichHezekiahs reformation in matters of relig-ion was carried is marked by the circum-stance that in his time the high places wereremoved, that is, the altars on them, andother erections attached to these were pull-ed down.1 After the time of Josiah we findno further mention of these high places; butthere is still a strong predilection
