Many of the valleys, es-pecially in the region round Feiran and theback or west sides of Mount Sinai, whereMoses led the flock of Jethro to feed, aboundin herbs and shrubs, tufts and bushes, afford-ing sufficient pasture for the many flockswhich are still kept by the Bedouins in thoseparts; and there is no doubt that the wilder-ness formerly afforded far greater resourcesthan now. This is proved by abundant ev-idence. There are unmistakable traces inmany parts of ancient fertility. There arethe ruins of cities, and the memory pre-served of many more; there are indicationsof water in different wadies, a proof that,had not the trees been so recklessly destroy-ed as they have been even in late years, veg-etation would have flourished. Starting in April from Rameses(1), crossing the head of the Gulf of Suez, the westernbranch of the Red Sea, the emigrants skirted its east-ern shore, and then striking across the peninsula,reached Sinai (14) in early summer. Here they re-mained nearly a year; and then, in the spring or earlysummer, set out for Canaan.
