Summary edit
DescriptionA garland of ripening berries - Black Bryony (Tamus communis) - geograph.org.uk - 571211.jpg |
English: A garland of ripening berries - Black Bryony (Tamus communis). Black bryony is not related to White Bryony. All parts of this plant are poisonous, including the tuber and roots. Ingestion results in vomiting, diarrhoea, burning of the mouth and throat and blistering of the digestive system; eating large amounts of the tuber can be fatal. Great care should be taken when handling it as contact with the tuber and roots can cause swelling, redness and burning. Green berries develop in late summer and change to black when ripe. The plant is common in Southern England, but less so from the Midlands northwards.
