DescriptionA glass of cloudy unfiltered beer- fascinating! (27798855532).jpg | Although we could have got a glass of regular Steam Whistle beer, our nice guide decided to fuel my curiosity and treated me to this glass of murky unfermented beer. You can ask for the regular one if you don't like this, but I'm sure you would like to try this, it's a bit unclear and not as crisp as the regular beer' he informed me. I was even more fascinated, as this was another first for me- it's not often that you get to taste beer still in the process of being brewed! This was indeed my lucky day! Unfiltered Steam Whistle comes from an earlier stage in the brewing process than you are used to receiving – after it has been brewed with the same four natural ingredients, fermented for a week, cold-aged for 3 weeks, but just before it has been filtered for packaging. Unfiltered beer is sometimes called Kellar bier which translates to “beer from the cellar” (the cellar where beer is long-cold aged). While there is a frothier head on this beer, it does lack the typical crispness and refreshing finish. The cloudy appearance, a slightly frothier head, and a yeasty aroma are due to the presence of yeast and barley proteins which would be removed upon filtration. This was indeed a rare opportunity to taste this one! (Toronto, Canada, Nov.2015) |
