They sailedvia New Orleans and landed at Cincinnati,after having been nearly three months on theway. They did not remain in the Queen City,but crossed the Ohio to Newport, Kentucky,and they continued to live here for the re-mainder of their lives. They were intelligentand excellent citizens and naturally soon be-came favorably known in the commtmity.The father helped to organize and was a char-ter member of the First German Baptistchurch of Newport, the edifice in which thecongregation worshipped being a small andhumble one erected on the southeast corner ofSixth and Columbia streets. Heand his wife were the parents of seven chil-dren, six of whom are living and he whosename initiates this sketch being the sixth inorder of birth. John Greife was reared in Newport and re-ceived his education in the excellent publicschools of the city. After his graduationfrom the high school he took a commercialcourse in the old Queen City Commercial Col-lege, situated on P^ifth and Walnut streets,Cincinnati, his natural tastes and inclinationsfitting him for a career in business. Afterfinishing at this institution he filled severalclerical positions in Cincinnati, bringing animusual amount of faithfulness and efficiencyto all of them.
