The king of Saxony still continued to attempt op-position ; but the sudden intelligence of Napoleons escaj^e fromElba spurred the Powers on to adjust the Saxon question withoutfurther delay. He was obliged to comply; and the result receivedon May 18 the form of a treaty of peace between Saxony, Prus-sia, and Russia. Austria secui-ed the maintenance of an interme-diate state, which, while far too weak for a bulwark, yet promised tobecome a pliable tool in any projects directed against Prussia. Theremaining territorial questions were now quickly despatched.
