As he strode firmlyalong, he presented, in his whole bearing, the picture of a sterlingman. His voice, however, was surprisingly shrill. During most ofhis life he enjoyed the best of health, but in the last four years of ithe was often tormented by fever. He usually worethe dress peculiar to the Frankish people, and put on richer garmentsonly on great festivals. Only twice — in Rome itself — could he beinduced to use the costly Roman attire.
