As in other coun-tries, the change of faith in Scandinavia brought about disturbingsocial and political changes. Here Christianization led to the ex-tinction of the ancient popular freedom, and of the indei:)endentlife of the tribes. The old folk-freedom met with a heavy blowwhen the old tribal kingships disappeared in the ninth and tenth cen-turies, and were replaced l)y vast territorial kingdoms. A systemof social orders similar to the Romano-German feudal system tookits lAdce in many cases. But everywhere the kingship claimed in-creased power, which was gradually recognized.
