A proclamation issued by Thiers and Mignet recommendedthe displacement of Charles X. by the duke of Orleans, who neverhad borne arms against France, and at Jemmapes had fought underthe tricolor. The next morning Thiers, commissioned by Laffitteand Sebastiani, hastened to the duke at Neuilly, the latter havingbeen previously advised of the visit by Talleyrand. But in order notto be urged to premature decision, the duke had left for Raincy. Thisintelligence immediately gave a positive direction to the consulta-tions of the deputies; and the desire to establish as quickly aspossible an acknowledged government as a protection against civilwar and anarchy harmonized almost all voices in the conclusion tointrust to the duke of Orleans the dignity of lieutenant-general ofthe kingdom. That was not a change of dynasty, but still a verydecided step toward it. In the duke conscientious thouofhts were contendinof with thesolicitations of ambition. Shortly before midnight he entered Paris.

The proclama-tion announcing this, as well as the restoration of the tricolor andthe summoning of the chambers, closed with the words : Hereafterthe charter will be a reality. With this, however, only the first half of the task was done.For the headquarters of the Revolution, at the Hotel de Ville, de-nounced as treachery this arbitrary proceeding of the deputies, andwere disposed to offer resistance. It was therefore found to be neces-sary that the duke should then obtain the po^iular consecration ofhis authority. It was an anxious and disorderly expedition whichmoved to the Hotel de Ville (Plate X.), the duke on horseback,and many deputies at the head of the procession. His recep-tion was cold.
