egreat square uponwhich stands thePalazzo Vecchio, andwhich was the centreof the life of the city,was to be enclosedby a vaulted arcadeof unexampled scale,which, had it beencarried out, wouldhave made the Piazzadella Signoria themost magnificentand imposing publicplace in the world.The decree for thiswork was passed bythe Grand Councilin November, 1356,while as yet the cityhad but partially re-covered from thefrightful ravages ofthe plague of 1348 ;but its commence-ment was delayed for another twenty years, and only a small portionof the splendid enterprise was ever carried out. This portion is knownas the Loggia dei Lanzi, the appellation being derived from Loggia delthe Landsknechts or Lansquenets, which formed at that ^^^^^i.time a portion of the garrison of Florence. It was long asserted tohave been the work of Andrea Orcagna, but it is now known thatOrcagna was dead some years before the loggia was begun, and thedesign is attributed to Benci di Clone and Simone Francesco Talenti.
