They were all, as popular fancy required,elevator hotels, l^ut they were all of the old type—solid masonrywalls and not of fire-proof construction. Even the Ilaza Hotel, fin-ished in 1890, was Init eight stories high. In the following year,however, the steel-skeleton system began to be applied to hotelstructures as well, and the Sav(3y, of eleven stories: the XewXetherland, of seventeen stories; the Waldorf, of twelve stories;the Astoria, still higher, and the Imperial, Holland, Xew Bucking-ham, ^lanhattan and others, of nearly equal importance, have fol-lowed and added greatly to the importance and even more to thebeauty of our city.
