e last obstacle in the wayof negro disfranchisement. In the election of 1880 there were four parties in the field. 498 A HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES The Republicans nominated James A. Garfield of Ohio on aplatform favoring a protective tariff, demanding a completereform in the Civil Service, opposing further grants of publicland to railroads and other corporations, and demanding thesuppression of polygamy in Utah. The Democrats named Winfield S. Hancock of Pennsylvaniaas presidential candidate on a platform demanding a tariff forrevenue (not protective) and the distribution of public landsto actual settlers (not to corporations). The Greenback Labor party nominated James B. Weaver ofIowa on a platform declaring that the government, and notbanking corporations, should issue all money, that public landsshould be kept for actual settlers, and that Congress shouldregulate commerce between the states. The Prohibition party nominated their great temperanceleader, General Neal Dow of Maine.

At the election of1880 the Republican candidate, James A. Garfield, was electedby a majority of fifty electoral votes over Hancock, the Demo-cratic nominee. Chester A. Arthur was chosen Vice-president.The result of the election was remarkable for its clear divisionbetween the two sections, the North and the South. TheRepublicans carried all the northern states except New Jersey,Nevada and California; the Democrats carried every southernstate. James A. Garfield (1831-1881), a native of Ohio, grew up ina log cabin in the backwoods of his native state. He becamea lawyer, and after filling a professorship at Hiram College,Ohio, entered the Union army and attained the rank of major-general. This position he resigned to serve as representativein the National House until 1880, when he was elected
