| Description |
A heartfelt plea in the case of a missing sister reached Wellington on 3 August 1912. It had been 33 years since Annie Barrat had heard from Julia Ward and in her letter to the Department of Internal Affairs she described herself as “her very anxious sister.” She does not explain why it had taken her so long to become worried. Julia had experienced a life of adventure, leaving Ireland with her husband and baby only to be shipwrecked and stranded on an unidentified island for two weeks. She eventually made it to New South Wales and was thought to have gone on to New Zealand but her trail had long gone cold. Despite the best efforts of the Police she was not found, leaving poor Annie with no way of discovering her fate. Shown here is Annie’s letter.
