the first German paperappeared at Germantown, in 1739.There were not fewer than six maga-zines before the Revolution. TheAmerican Daily Advertiser was the firstdaily paper in America, and commencedits daily appearance in 1784. ThePittsburgh Gazette, the first newspaperin the western part of the state, beganabout 1786. An imperfect list of theperiodical journals published in thestate, between the close of the Revolu-tionary war and 1828, given in the Amer-ican Almanac for 1835, names thirty-six.The number has since greatly increased,in every department. Railroads.—The great line of trans-portation is to extend from Philadelphiato Pittsburgh, 336 miles, overcoming2,380 feet elevation. Of this, 108 mileshave been completed, to Harrisburg, andthe remaining 228 will probably be inuse ere long. The middle of threeroutes surveyed is likely to be prefer-red, which crosses the Susquehannahfour miles above Harrisburg. Thisroute, for 104 miles beyond, has nograde exceeding twenty-five feet per
