he centre fore-ground a bishop, the patron inprayer, kneels, with the word Sy-raon written beneath him. Inthe former, the Saviour on the crossreceives the lance-wound fromLonginus. The Virgin, to the left,lies on the ground in a swoon,partly raised by the Marys andsurrounded by people. This again isSimones modification of Duccios well known old form of compos-ition, Avhich Barna afterwardsfollowed at S. Gimignano. TheMagdalen grasps the foot of thecross, whilst children and otherpersons stand by pointing at theVirgin. The Saviour in this pieceis not alive as in the chapel ofthe Pope at Avignon, but hangsat length between two angels whofly by his arms. Behold, tby father and I bave sought tliee sorrowing. CHRIST FOUND IN THE TEMPLE; a picture by Simone di \Iartino, in tbeEcyal Institution, Tiverpool. Chap. III. SIMONES DEATH. 99 in which he left his house and furniture at Sienna tohis wife Johanna and the rest of his property to hisnephews and nieces. ^ His relict in the brown garb of the widows of thetime, returned to Sienna almost immediately after hisdeath with Donato. In evidence given by her on atrial between the heirs of Simone and Donato in 1355(Donato having expired in Aug. 13471) she declared thather husband had died at Avignon.2 Masses and vigilsfor his soul were said and held at Sienna on the fourth ofAugust.3 Donato, who obviously painted in company of Simoneat Avignon, has not left any pictures behind; and hencehe may be supposed to have been a second rate artist.
