THE LANDING OF THE BODY OF ST. JAMES; fresco, in the CappellaS. Felics of St. Anthonys Church at Padua. Chap. IX. CAPPELLA S. FELICE AT PADUA. 235 in the six lunettes at the sides and a double course atthe ends of the chapel; the first episodes beginning inthe lunette of the East end or to the spectators left ashe enters. Three scenes fill this space. S. James preaches in thepulpit of the temple of Jerusalem to a crowd of men andwomen; whilst on the left the magicians Hermogenes andPhiletus confer as to the means of combating his doctrines.On the right, Hermogenes is carried away by the fiends,and a crowd flies in terror from the spirits that surroundthem. Continuing the subjects on the lunettes of the Southside, the painter represents the apostle revealing thedivine nature of his mission by ordering the fiends to bringhim Hermogenes and Philetus. Hermogenes appears at hisinvocation carried down by a dragon, and, throwing awaythe magical books which perish in fire, he is baptised, whi
