ndoned by the demon, but savedby a deer. In the next lower course, S. Stephen goesthrough the rite of ordination. He kneels and embraces thehand of the bishop. A fine figure in front to the left holdsthe crozier before a group of spectators. More to the right,S. Stephen is embraced by the owner of a house whoseems about to lead him into an apartment, where a mad-man lies bound and surrounded by devils. Finally, to theright, S. Stephen disputes in the synagogue. In the thirdcourse the death of S. Stephen is represented. The saintlies in state in the centre of a church, bewailed by twofemales who sit in grief at his head and feet. On the left,the clergy perform the funeral service, on the right is astanding group of prelates and churchmen, prominentamongst whom is Carlo de Medici, superintendent of thePrato cathedral after the death of Geminiano Inghirami types and character recal the ;- x Pitture di Fra Filippo Lippi,works of Sandro Botticelli. ; &c. ub. sup. p.p. 31 and following.

Chap. XIII. FRA FILIPPO VISITS PERUGIA. 341 in 1460. These groups stand on a platform, at the side ofwhich to the left are the words: Frater Filippus, op. In a corner to the right of this fresco Fra Filippo in-troduced the episode of the stoning of Stephen which hasbeen greatly damaged by damp and by, perhaps, necessaryrestoring.x The end wall of the choir, lighted by a window, isadorned with figures of S.S. Giovanni Gualberto and Albert.The glass of the window, representing the Virgins gift ofthe girdle to S. Thomas, was executed in 1459 by PreteLorenzo da Pelago,2 from designs which seem to have beenfurnished by the Fra, so much do they remind one of hisstyle. In the segments of the ceiling, the four evangelistsand their symbols are depicted, each being seated on cloudsunder prismatic arches on a star-bespangled sky and inthe midst of choirs of angels.
