In spite of the difficulty experienced at first by the i)rovincial treasurer, to-day thefinancial status is as follows: Gold: Assets $45,441.59 Liabilities 27,708.66 Surplus 17,732.93 * ■:> it * ii -.i .■■ Notwithstanding the pueblos have suffered terribly from the locust plague, thelast crop of maize, the chief article of food of the natives, was very abundant. Theprovincial government voted the sum of $250 gold out of the provincial fund tofight the plague, saving, fortunately, the crop of the last-named pueblo (Bais), whichis estimated at 110,000 i)iculs of sugar (137.) lbs. =1 picul). The flourishing condition of the fields of maize, palay (rice), hemp, and sugar,augurs well tor the future j^rosperity of our pueblos. * * * The disposition ofthe pueblos toward the new regime under American sovereignty is, on the whole,favorable.
