These volcanoes lie along the margins of THE PLATEAU OF TIIK GREAT TAKES 499 the more easterly of the threat rift valleys which form anotable feature of the l^^ast African plateau (see Fi^. 125).It should be noted that Lakes Victoria, Mweru andliani^weolo are not rift valley lakes, but occupydepressions in the general level of the plateau.
Text Appearing After Image:
0 to 3000 feetover 3000 feet /op ZOp MILES Fig. 137.—The East African Plateau. On the cast the plateau descends to a low, unhealthy, coastal plain, varying in width from a few miles atMombasa in the centre, to about one hundred and fiftymiles near the mouth of the Jub in the north. On thev/est it descends from the highlands of the western riftvalley to the lower plateau of the Congo basin. 500 AFRICA The temperature conditions on the plateau may bedescribed as very warm at all seasons. On the coastalplains it is hot at all seasons. This equable distributionof temperature is in both cases due to nearness to theequator, whilst the higher temperature on the plains isdue to the lower altitude. As regards rainfall, theplains have a much heavier rainfall than the plateau, and there is a marked increase in the amount as onegoes from north to south. The coastal plains receiverains at all seasons, but most falls in summer. Thisseasonal distribution of rainfall is also true of the LakeVictoria
