English: A rooftop view of Barics Mon 285367. The lack of hygiene was a major problem in the barracks. There was a standing joke that when the 'Moniars' (the men of Mon) went home for the weekend the fleas did not sleep too well without company, and would be waiting on the doorstep Monday morning to welcome them back. Around 1903 a committee was set up to try and improve conditions in the barracks. This was promptly dubbed 'Pwyllgor Chwain' - the Flea Committee. At the same time 124 Moniars successfully petitioned the management for the supply of piped water to the barracks. Written, in English, at the bottom of the petition are the words: Granted 30/7/03 520yds. 1/2" pipe at 10d per Yard. Total £22. The £22 was deducted from the men's wages. |
