DescriptionA temple in India, Madana-Mohana Temple, Bishnupur.jpg |
Bishnupur is a town in Bankura district in West Bengal, around 140 km from Kolkata. The town is famous for its unique terracotta temples constructed between 17th and 18th centuries during the reign of Malla kings that ruled here. Around 30 temples from that era still survive and out of these around 20 temples are now renovated and maintained by Archeological Survey of India (ASI). The intricate terracotta pallets that are found on the walls of the temples depict the mythological stories from Ramayana and Krishna Lila and some on hunting, on domestic and wild animals. A one day trip from Kolkata to the town of Bisnupur is something of worth considering! |
