The bones serveto give attachment to the muscles and act as a support forthe body and as an aid to locomotion. They also serve toprotect the delicate organs from external injury. Thus, thebrain is protected by the skull and the heart and lungs bythe ribs. They also serve as an aid and support for most ofthe voluntary actions. For instance, if the hands and armscontained no bones all of the ordinary movements would bedifficult or impossible. On the other hand, most of the invol-untary movements of the body, such as the heart action andthe digestion, go on without the direct aid of the skeleton. The skeleton is divided, for purposes of description, intothe head, the trunk and the extremities. The Head.—The head is made up of the cranium andthe bones of the face.
