The Generals first visit was paid to the Uffizi Gallery, thatwonderful collection of works of art of which Florence is justlyproud. The General was surprised at the extent and magni-ficence of the collection, and greatly enjoyed the stroll throughthe galleries. Visits were paid to the Pitti Palace, which is alsorich in paintings and statuary, the National Museum, the Academyof Fine Arts, and other prominent places. It was General Grantsgood fortune also to be in Florence at Easter, when he attendedthe impressive services held at the great Duomo, or Cathedraldel Santa Maria del Fiore. This beautiful structure is sur-mounted by a dome of grand proportions, which is said tohave furnished Michael Angelo with a model for that of St.Peters at Rome. From Florence General Grant and his party went to Veniceby railway, and reached that city on the 23d of April. He wasmet at the station by the American Consul-General, Mr. JohnHarris, and a large party of Americans. The city authoritieswere also present to welcome him to Venice and offer him thehospitalities of the city. Several speeches of a congratulatorycharacter were made, to which the General returned suitablereplies, and then the travellers were conducted to their hotel.Three days were passed in Venice. They were very pleasant,and, as there was much to see, were very busy ones. Venice is in one respect the most remarkable city in the worldsIt is built upon one hundred and fourteen islands, lying in a baynear the Gulf of Venice, and but a short distance from the Adri-atic Sea.
