English: A view of the old city of Mdina from the outskirts of nearby Ħaż-Żebbuġ. Founded by the Phoenicians in antiquity, the fortified city of Mdina continued to serve as Malta's capital city for succeeding centuries, up until the arrival of the Order of St. John in 1530, when Birgu became the headquarters for the new ruling elite.
