In 1988 klopt Eddy Planckaert de Nederlander John Talen in de spurt. Planckaert treedt daarmee – in eerste instantie – in de voetsporen van broer Walter, die ook al twee keer de snelste was in Waregem. Zes maanden later wordt die zege hem ontnomen. In Cyclo-Sprint, het wekelijks officieel orgaan van de Belgische Wielerbond, wordt in september gemeld dat Planckaert na afloop van Dwars door België [sic] positief testte op codeïne, een hoestremmend product.
