Summary edit

Description
English: This bronze bust of Abraham Lincoln stands twelve feet, six inches tall (3.8 m), mounted on a thirty foot tall (9.1 m) granite pedestal. The location is exit 323 at the Summit Rest Area and Visitor Center on Interstate 80, approximately seven miles (11 km) east of Laramie, Wyoming.

At an elevation of 8,640 feet (2,633 m), this is the highest point on Interstate 80. The Wyoming Parks Commission dedicated the monument to commemorate Lincoln’s 150th birthday and mark the high point of the old Lincoln Highway in 1959. It was moved to its present location after this section of Interstate 80 was completed in 1969.

Robert Russian, an art Professor at the University of Wyoming, created this stern, brooding, sculpture. It was cast in Mexico City with 30 bronze segments designed to be bolted together, then transported and assembled in Wyoming. The base is hollow, with an access ladder and lightening rods inside.

Personal note: Photographed on a cross-country road trip in 2005. I saw the monument from a distance on I-80 and pulled off to find out what it was. Descriptive text above is compiled from displays at the visitor center. This unusual angle was shot from the base, looking up.
