Description

Description: Three-quarter length portrait of Walkowitz. Walkowitz, Abraham, 1880-1965

Creator/Photographer: Clarence H. White Birth Date: 1871 Death Date: 1925

Entirely self-taught, Clarence H. White mastered the art of photography by creating a balance between composition and the subtlety of natural light. His photographs are considered gentle, pictorial, simple, and open, and they often focus on his own friends or family members. In 1902 White joined Alfred Stieglitz, Gertrude Käsebier, and other photographers in establishing the Photo-Secession movement, and as the founder of the Clarence H. White School of Photography in New York, he guided many students--including Dorothea Lange and Paul J. Outerbridge--on to greatness.
