English: The conclusion of the Pythagorean theorem is an equality of surface areas: a 2 + b 2 = c 2, with traditional notations. To depict the theorem, the image shows two times five puzzle pieces that surround a given right triangle. The five pieces form together two squares with sizes a and b on the top, and then only one square with dimension c, which is the hypotenuse length of the initial triangle. The total area of the five pieces is constant whatever their assemblage. Français : La conclusion du théorème de Pythagore est une égalité d’aires : a 2 + b 2 = c 2, avec les notations tradionnelles. Pour illustrer le théorème, l’image montre deux fois cinq pièces de puzzle, qui entourent un triangle rectangle donné. Les cinq pièces forment ensemble deux carrés de tailles a et b en haut, puis un carré de dimension c, qui est la longueur de l’hypoténuse du triangle initial. L’aire totale des cinq pièces est constante quel que soit leur assemblage. |
