English: Achtung, Spitfeuer! There were two operational squadrons of Spitfires (along with Hurricanes and Defiants) based here at RAF Turnhouse during the Battle of Britain:
No 603 Squadron from 5 May 1940 No 65 Squadron from 28 August 1940 More here http://www.battle-of-britain.co.uk Powered by the 12-cylinder, 27-litre Merlin MkII engine http://www.adam-lisa.supanet.com/merlin.htm [Ooohh, just listen http://avanimation.avsupport.com/sound/Merlin.wav ], the Spitfire is probably the most famous fighter aircraft in British history. In the summer of 1940 it played a key role in shooting down many of the enemy planes during the raids over Britain. It helped secure air superiority over Britain and, though air attacks continued, Britain was never outgunned again. The Prime Minister at the time, Winston Churchill, immortalised the Battle of Britain by underlining the courage of the allied airmen with the words... "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." Perhaps the biggest accolade paid to this aircraft was reputedly made at the height of the Battle of Britain by German ace, Adolf Galland. When asked what he needed to win the war in the sky he turned to his Commander in Chief, Hermann Göring, and demanded "Get me a squadron of Spitfires!" |
