Summary edit

Description
English: The clock tower and the Plough Inn at Clapham Common, London, England. A view from Clapham High Street (today's A3) near the junction with Clapham Park Road, looking past the clock tower and along The Pavement (today's B224).

The Valentine's Series photograph was taken before the domed tube station entrance and public toilet buildings were erected, therefore dated possibly pre-1907 but before the postal date of 1915. The Plough Inn is noted in 18th-century sources, and in the London Medical Gazette of 1837-38 with a reported use for coroner courts. The original Inn was at 156 High Street, and was re-sited here as no.196, rebuilt as part of the mid-Victorian terrace shown in the photograph. The Victorian building was rebuilt in timber-framed mock-Tudor style, documented as The Plough Inn by a Frith postcard of 1960. The name subsequently changed to the Goose and Granite, and is in 2015 identified as an O'Neill's faux Irish pub. The only buildings surviving redevelopment are those of The Pavement in a terrace located by a 'Sale' banner to the right of the clock tower.
