Summary edit

Description
English: A cropped image of "Adam lay ybounden", a 15th Century Middle English poem which forms part of the famous Sloane Manuscript (BL MS. 2593), held in the British Library. Digitised by the British Library, the 2D manuscript itself is in the public domain by virtue of its age, and this image has been cropped to remove any 3D elements of the original higher resolution photograph. As this manuscript is held within the British Library and due to its age and fragility is unlikely to be released for public photography, this low resolution image is felt to be a fair 2D representation of a historic, one-off manuscript for the purposes of criticism of the text by the not-for-profit Wikimedia Foundation, in the same manner as other historic single 2D artefacts such as File:Ellesmere Manuscript Knight Portrait.jpg.
This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain
This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

Public domain works must be out of copyright in both the United States and in the source country of the work in order to be hosted on the Commons. If the work is not a U.S. work, the file must have an additional copyright tag indicating the copyright status in the source country.
Note: This tag should not be used for sound recordings.PD-1923Public domain in the United States//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adam_lay_ybounden.jpg
The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
