Surveying River Users If you are providing a service, the best way to find out how well you are doing is by asking the clients. This simple rule is ignored for at least two reasons: (1) the often mistaken assumption that the de- sires of clients are already known, and (2) an appreciation of the difficulties involved in accurately surveying public opinion. North Central Station recrea- tion scientists have developed a guide to help river managers learn more about river users. River managers now have a method at their disposal for incorporating client preferences into their resource alloca- tion decisions. The guide includes a set of standardized questions for surveying people taking float trips. Instructions for asking the questions and examples of interpretation of answers are provided.
