Description
English: Bow view of the U.S. Navy missile test ship USS Norton Sound (AVM-1) off the San Francisco Naval Shipyard, California (USA), on 2 July 1956, following a regular overhaul.
The ship is equipped with an early SPQ-5 missile guidance radar atop the bridge and the earlier Mark 25 Mod. 6, aft. SPS-6 and SPS-10 radars is fitted on the mast, SPQ-2 is fitted on a seperate mast (behind the crane). A helicopter landing deck was fitted forward as a launcher for SAM-N-2 Terrier missiles was titted on the aircraft deck, aft. Note the missiles aft of the launcher.
