Summary edit
DescriptionAfter the harvest - Hemswell Cliff - geograph.org.uk - 545556.jpg |
English: After the harvest - Hemswell Cliff A vivid example of the way grain farming has changed over the decades. The two lines of waste straw measure the width of today's combine harvesters - I can still remember the old reaper and binder in use with a cut of around 5 feet! Similarly, the amount of waste straw is much less than it would have been due to the development of varieties with a much shorter stem length. This allows the plants to concentrate on building up the grain content, makes them more resistant to wind and rain damage, and reduces the waste.
The picture also shows the reversion to agricultural use of a wartime airfield. The hardstanding on which the lorry is parked is the end of one of the runways. |
