DescriptionAge-worn door latch and lock on well-weathered planks - original image Kodachrome 25 colour reversal film, May 1980 ( DSC1340).jpg |
English: A combination of an age-worn door latch and a rusted lock affixed to well-weathered planks secure the door of a deserted factory at Dötlingen, Germany. The original photograph was taken on Kodachrome 25 colour reversal film in May 1980, and was digitalised in June 2018 on a 42 megapixel sensor.

Additional Information edit
en: Digitised image originally shot on 35mm colour reversal film.
- Colour reversal film: The original photograph was taken with a Canon A1 body and a Canon FD 50mm F1.4 lens on Kodachrome 25 colour reversal film (25 ISO) at Dötlingen, Germany, in May 1980. As always on my tours, the camera body was permanently secured to a semi-professional tripod and was painstakingly aligned and focussed.
- Colour stability: In contrast to many other brands of colour reversal films the Kodachrome 25 and 64 films I have been using almost exclusively from 1976 to 2008 have preserved not only the image details but also all three colour layers very accurately.
- Digitalisation: This image was digitalised in June 2018 on a Sony Alpha 7RII 42 megapixel sensor with a Canon FD 50mm F3.5 macro lens on a Novoflex FD bellows with an integrated slide duplicator, both attached to the camera body via a Novoflex Canon FD to Sony E adapter and all-manual settings.
- RAW processing: The resulting RAW file was processed two times from scratch until the natural colour balance present in the film layers was correctly recreated on the third attempt. The main details of this process, including LAB-mode processing and additional sharpening, are pinpointed in the "user comment" within the image's EXIF data.
- Film resolution: Despite ideal shooting conditions the resolution of the film is clearly less than that of the modern sensor and. Here (scroll to chapter "Film") a Kodak spokesman states that (35mm film has the equivalent of 6K resolution), i.e. 6kx4k=24 megapixels at a ratio of 1:1.5. Nevertheless I have (apart from cropping the slightly tilted edges) retained the full sensor resolution of this image and have decided to sharpen the result to more than standard level, i.e. 150% in Photoshop lore. The optimum redition of detail in this image will appear at aproximately 50-60% of the full image size, i.e. approx. 10-15 megapixels.
- Lens resolution: I will have to test this more thoroughly yet, but my first impression is that the resolution was not limited by the lens, as the digital image with its superior resolution was taken by a Canon FD macro lens closely related to the Canon FD prime lens used for the initial photograph, both purchased some 40 years ago. A further test with a modern, digitally optimised macro lens would probably not much improve on this.
- CAVEAT 1: The information I haven provided may offer some help when processing similar colour reversal films. More about this subject is planned on my user site.
- CAVEAT 2: Some of the technical categories "taken with ..." refer to the camera outfit used for the original image shot and some to the digitisation process.
