c. 1900 Lithograph Undivided back 13.95x9.20cm This postcard is from the German Gruss Aus (Greetings from) tradition important to birth of postcards. The first use mass use of postcards in the late 1890s involved the use of this phrase with images from any place in the world a visitor might find themselves in, leading some to claim that the phrase "launched" the postcard revolution at the turn of the century. This is an early image by D. Macropolo & Co., a Kolkata publisher that became one of India's biggest postcard publishers by roughly 1910. Ahmedabad was not often depicted on postcards. The monument shown is the Qutb Minar, one of the tallest man-made towers in the world at the time. |
