Français : Le tableau prend pour thème Le Bravo, roman écrit par l’auteur américain James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851). Le Bravo, dont l’intrigue se passe à Venise, désigne ni plus ni moins qu’un tueur à gage en argot italien. Cette histoire vénitienne, publiée en anglais pour la première fois en 1831 est aussitôt traduite en français. La scène illustre de manière romantique le moment où Gelsomina se rend auprès du doge pour le supplier de gracier son amant Jacopo Frontoni.
Ce roman eut un rapide et franc succès comme le démontrent les multiples représentations qui en furent faites en peinture pendant le décennie 1835-1845. L’œuvre d’Aimée Brune-Pagès fut donc la première d’une longue série ou purent également s’illustrer des peintres comme Pierre Perlet, Félix Cottrau, Madame Clément, Irma Martin, Charlemagne-Oscar Guet.
