Image title | Secretary of the Air Force Michael W. Wynne, joined by Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard Newton, deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and requirements, Headquarters, U.S. Air Force, holds a press conference at the Pentagon, Oct. 19, 2007, to talk about an incident which occurred on Aug. 30, 2007, involving the mishandling of nuclear weapons. On that day, a weapons loading crew at Minot Air Force Base, N. D. accidentally loaded a pylon of nuclear armed air-launched cruise missiles on the wing of a B-52 bomber for transport Barksdale Air Force Base, La. The error went undetected until the aircraft landed at its destination. Wynne indicated that the incident was being taken very seriously and several high-ranking officers had been relieved of their commands as the investigation continues. DoD photo by R. D.
