Inscriptions An inscription on the reverse provides the title for this painting, but like many of Bierstadt's paintings, the subject might be drawn more from the artist's imagination than from an actual spot. Whyte's Lake, a man-made lake, existed only one year, 1877, and was washed out by floods the following year.
