Description
English: Albion Street Junior School, Albion Street, Rotherhithe, London, SE16 Opened 16-11-1964 between Renforth Street and Clack Street - the original, built 1872, was on land further east. The school boasted a ceremony dating back to 1919 that was sadly stopped about 2000. I doubt if any other school in the country boasted of such a ceremony:- "Ex Albion Street schoolboys went to 'The War' and many failed to return. As an ongoing memorial for those who died, those who returned arranged a one off show at the Terris Theatre (Rotherhithe Hippodrome - Culling Road) - proceeds that amounted to £100 were put in trust for the school". The annual profits paid for book prizes for the boy and girl who had tried their hardest during the year. The presentation centred around a small play, carried out as near as possible to Armistice day. The presentation was carried out by the local MP who for many years was Bob Mellish. I know that in 1984 the prizes cost £40-00 that far exceeded the annual profits but ...
