( Europe's largest artificial lake ) A albufeira do Alqueva inunda uma área de 25000 hectares, dos quais 3500 em território espanhol. Actualmente o Alqueva é uma importante reserva estratégica de água e a maior reserva portuguesa (com cerca de 250 km2 de superfície e 83 km de comprimento). O armazenamento de água é também um armazenamento de energia. É a maior hídrica a sul do Tejo e a terceira hidroeléctrica em potência instalada. Produz 460 GW/ano, o suficiente para alimentar uma cidade com 250 mil habitantes.
