Description
English: Painted by Alfred Bastien in 1918. In this painting by Belgian artist Alfred Bastien, two dead horses remain harnessed to the gun carriage they had been pulling. Horses moved artillery pieces into position and kept them supplied with shells. Although the Canadian Army Veterinary Corps strived to maintain the health of tens of thousands of army horses, many died. For soldiers, the screaming of injured horses was one of the most disturbing sounds heard on the battlefield.
